Deepa's Journey: 2023 EOFY

Here in Australia, we’re finally coming out of the pandemic. Life has changed – work from home options increased, schools and universities implemented online learning, we can see family and friends and explore internationally again, and we’ve adjusted to changes like the rise of QR codes. Things are looking up!

But one thing hasn’t changed…Modern slavery is on the rise worldwide, with an estimated 50 million people trapped in this horrible industry. Of those, an estimated 18 million are in India alone; the fourth largest number of trafficked persons in the world.

But there is HOPE. We are fighting for change, one life at a time.

Deepa’s Journey: From Survival to Entrepreneurship

Restored hope and future possibilities…

Deepa, a 31-year-old woman from Bangalore, India, battled through a life marked by adversity. Married at a young age, she endured an abusive relationship and made the painful decision to give up her son for adoption in an effort to protect him. Later, she fell victim to human trafficking.

But hope was on the horizon. She was rescued in a police raid and placed in a government rehab facility. Sadly, opportunities were few and far between in the years she remained in the government system.

However, everything changed when The Freedom Project India introduced baking training at the rehab facility. Deepa, recognising a chance to break free and realise her dreams, eagerly embraced the opportunity. Over the next eight months, she developed her baking skills, discovering a passion that ignited her spirit.

Now, on the cusp of completing her training, Deepa has set her sights on entrepreneurship. Her dream is to establish a creative shop, where she can showcase her baking talents and unleash her artistic flair. This newfound aspiration offers her the first real opportunity to escape the confines of a system that held her captive for far too long.

Although yet to complete the internship, her determination, teamwork skills, and eagerness to learn have earned her recognition from a successful home baker. They offered her a six-month internship with the promise of a job afterward, propelling her closer to her goal of financial independence.

This End of Financial Year, we’re hoping to raise $100,000,

which can help rescue 1,000 individuals from slavery’s grasp!

$97 can help us rescue survivors and lead to placing them in the path of opportunity like Deepa! Your donation can help us continue to provide rescue and restoration.
