Our Strategy

We are desperate to see people move from ignorance to knowledge, apathy to passion and helplessness to empowerment. Our strategy is simple.

1.	Partnership

We work with existing Christian organisations engaged in all aspects of slavery and trafficking. We want to make their job easier and more effective by resourcing them with funds, advocacy at all levels, legal support, volunteer workers and prayer.

2.	Membership

Giving donations will always be welcomed and greatly appreciated however we see membership as being the key to the real effectiveness of The Freedom Project. Membership carries a sense of ownership and unity, which is a vital weapon against the evil of slavery. The starting point of membership is a commitment to an ongoing financial investment. From there, the TAKE ACTION page has great ideas about ways to get involved. Members will be kept at the heart of The Freedom Project through email updates and news.

Membership falls under 2 categories:

Individual (students from as little as $5 per month!)

Organisational (Church, School, Company, Club, College...)

To become a Member of The Freedom Project go to the DONATE page.

3.	Friendship

If you are not ready or able to become a member of The Freedom Project, we'd love you to still stand with us and become our friend! Your friendship and support through both action and prayer is highly valued and needed for the ongoing strength of our work. Go to the TAKE ACTION page to see how you can get involved.

We'd love you to be on our email list to stay at the heart of what the The Freedom Project is doing. Go to the DONATE page and sign up today!

The Freedom Project was established in 2010 by Michael and Liz Newton-Brown as an International Christian aid organisation working to eradicate the obscene injustice of slavery and human trafficking. Driven by the desire to seek justice, love mercy and be a voice for the voiceless, our mandate is to bring the issue of slavery out of the darkness and into the light.

Travelling to countries including Uganda, Cambodia, Thailand, India and the USA, to research the issues of slavery and trafficking, the scope of the problem compelled them to act. The Freedom Project was borne from and continues to be built on 2 strong convictions:

Authentic faith is always accompanied by good deeds.

The injustice of modern day slavery must be stopped.

Holawwa’s Story

Holawwa Harijan is a 30 year old ritualized prostitute - or a 'devadasi'. She lives with her family including her 2 children. When she was 6 years old she was dedicated as a devadasi by her family to a Hindu temple. She thought that her dedication would bring high esteem and status and that she would be seen as a goddess. After her dedication she grew up with her family in her village until she was 18 years old. It was at this time that her honoured status as a devadasi thrust her into her worst nightmare. She was trafficked by a local 'agent' working on behalf of the temple priest to a brothel in another Indian state. Traumatised by the abuse she was desperate to come home, but was unable to leave the brothel due to pressure from her family to bring in some more income. She remained in the horror of the brothel for many years, until illness enabled her to return to her family.

News of Holawwa's situation reached the staff of OMIF and they visited her home to see what they could do. She agreed to attend one of OMIF's aids clinics where sadly she tested positive for HIV. She is now being treated and counseled by the OMIF clinic staff and is taking her first steps towards rebuilding her life.

If only Holawwa's story was the only one to be told. The reality is that across southern India, there are over 250,000 women who have been deceived into the life of a devadasi. Girls as young as 5 are being given the special honour of dedication to a temple and then at puberty become the innocent victims of human trafficking where they are sold into a life of sexual slavery.

We are in partnership with OMIF to bring solutions to this massive need. Our resources will help them effectively locate, test and treat for HIV/Aids and rehabilitate those enslaved in ritualized prostitution. Through micro enterprise and micro finance projects, vocational training and womens empowerment programs, the cycle can be broken.

OMIF – Operation Mercy India Foundation

OMIF is a sister concern of the India Group of OM Ministries. It is involved in uplifting and empowering the oppressed Dalits.he "untouchables."

The Dalits, also called the "untouchables," "outcastes," and most recently "slumdogs," comprise nearly one quarter of India's society, with population estimates of 250 million people. The term "Dalit" means "those who have been broken and ground down deliberately by those above them in the social hierarchy." Dalits live at risk of discrimination, dehumanization, violence, and enslavement through human trafficking every day. By all global research and reports, the Dalits constitute the largest number of people categorized as victims of modern-day slavery.

OMIF seeks to liberate these oppressed people from their century old bondage to the upper caste people.

OMIF is accomplishing this by providing these people with basic facilities including:

Education

Economic Development

Healthcare

Social Justice

Get Active

10 different ways to get active!

Become a member of The Freedom Project. Go to the DONATE page and get on board!

Start a conversation with someone about the issue. Bring it into the open and make it a topic of discussion amongst your family and friends.

Write to your local politician. Making our local and national politicians aware of the problem in our own city and across the globe brings slavery into the open. And puts pressure on them to act. Speak to your local member about what they are doing about this issue in our very own suburbs.

Post a comment on Facebook. Keep the dialogue going with quotes from books, facts you’ve discovered, thoughts you have about slavery and trafficking. Stir up interest and get it on people’s agendas. Be an advocate for The Freedom Project online!

Organise your own fundraiser. Get creative…Gather your friends and family and have some fun – raise awareness and money at the same time!
Ideas for fundraisers include, cake stalls, jelly bean guessing competition, car wash, movie/dvd nights, walk-a-thon, fun run, trivia night, raffles, mufti days, karaoke party, hold a dinner party, a lunch, a picnic, sell some artwork, jewellery making, gingerbread house event, sausage sizzle….

Buy Fair Trade Products and take seriously consumer awareness and buying. Go to the SLAVERY page and read about what fair trade is all about.

Educate yourself. Get yourself equipped and savvy about the issues of slavery and trafficking. See our resource list.

Start a book group at school, uni or amongst your friends. Read one of the books from the resource list and meet together to discuss it. Watch a movie/dvd together. Journey together as you learn and grow in your understanding of slavery and trafficking.

Volunteer. Contact us to see what opportunities there are to volunteer. We need passionate, creative, people to carry The Freedom Project forward.

Pray: Pray on your own, or with friends. Start a prayer group at school, or church or amongst your friends. Put the issue in the prayer bulletin at your church.

Who and what to pray for:

Pray for the victims of trafficking and slavery - for safety, release and rescue from captors, peace, strength, courage, salvation, forgiveness, healing and healthy rehabilitation and job training.

Pray for the victims families – for income generation, peace, courage, support, salvation, safety. Pray for the traffickers and slave owners – for conviction of their sin, plans to be confused and thwarted, for criminal convictions that lead to justice, the closure of brothels, repentance and salvation.

Pray for the organisations who are working all over the world to fight this evil – for wisdom, courage, protection resources and safety, success with trials and convictions of traffickers and slave owners. Pray for governments and government bodies with power to change laws.

Pray for The Freedom Project – for wisdom, resources, courage, great partnerships, effectiveness, growing membership.

Pray against the strongholds of evil that manifest in slavery and trafficking.

Pray against apathy, tolerance and indifference within us – that it would be exchanged with passion and outrage and courage so we can be used in this battle for God’s glory.
